Market News September 2018

HEADINGLEY FARMERS’ MARKET SATURDAY 8th SEPTEMBER  2018 (2nd Saturday of the month)

The August market was a bit quieter than usual as several stall holders and some regular customers were on holiday. However, the sun shone, the music was great and we had a fun kid’s Teapot game inspired by the rather amusing article in The Times about the more than a million retweets about our ‘market’s tea picture’.

We realised how hard the weather has hit our producers when Jason from Organic Pantry told us that they had been up to water their crops every 3 hrs throughout the night in heatwave! Chris from Stickey Honey says that his bees haven’t been making as much honey as expected as there is so little nectar in the flowers. With the hot weather fewer people have been buying soups from Thistlemist. This all shows how hard our producers work and how important your support of all our market stalls is. Thankyou.

The SEPTEMBER MARKET will be really busy, with 23 stalls expected!

We will have 3 NEW STALLS

SLOW RISE BAGELS are bringing a great variety of bagels made in their bakery in Leeds.

REALLY INDIAN who are based in Meanwood, source all their vegetables from Yorkshire. They will be bringing samosas, onion bhajis, pakoras and their cook- in curry sauces have different recipes from 6 regions of India.

WILDCRAFT BAKERY also based in Meanwood, are a completely GLUTEN FREE bakery. They specialise in making Gluten free breads and other gluten free products. We are delighted to have a new Gluten free stall as Glutenfreekz are unable to attend our markets because of ill health.

MELANIES CHOCOLATES are back, unless the heatwave returns with the high melting risk!

BACK GARDEN BLOOMS with wonderful flowers.

PLATE 2 PLATE compost has proved very popular and will be back with freshly made compost  for your autumn mulching. Please return any of their bags you may have lying around your gardens.

STICKEYS HONEY with their wide selection of honeys.

YORKSHIRE PIE BAKERY with their wide range of different flavoured pork pies.

John JOHNSON with his ever popular fresh fish.

As usual we will have our THREE CHEESE STALLS bringing very delicious but very different types of cheeses to Headingley, LINCOLNSHIRE POACHER, CRYER AND STOTT and SQUEAKY CHEESE (Syrian halloumi style cheese). They all have prize winning varieties and lots of tasters to try. Lincolnshire Poacher sell raw milk and butter from their farm as well as cheeses.

BONDGATE BAKERY from Otley will have a wide selection of all kinds of breads.

SWILLINGTON ORGANIC will bring chicken, pork, beef and lamb from their East Leeds Organic farm including their award-winning sausages. There will also  be venison.

Des Trio, a new band for us but well known on the Leeds circuit, will be performing from about 10.30am

Our monthly game for the kids is becoming more and more popular. We have a different game every month – always fun to do and everyone gets a small prize. Often we have a special game for the older kids. Come to the Headingley Development Trust (HDT) Stall to join in.

The HDT Stall has lots of information about events in Headingley. If you are not already a member of HDT you can give your support to the many local projects it runs by becoming a member for £5. The stall also sells the red Farmers’ Market shoulder bags for £4 each.

Don’t forget to bring your recycling- egg boxes, jars and bottles and the bags from Plate to Plate.

We do not sell hot food and drinks at the Market as there are lots of cafes in Headingley. Why not have a coffee or lunch at HEART Café on nearby Bennett Rd. Like the Farmers’ Market it is an HDT project so please support it.

We look forward to seeing you, your friends and family 9-12.30 on Saturday 8th September at the Rose Garden, Headingley LS6 3JJ.
