market news

April was a brilliant Market, sunshine, loads of stalls, crowds of happy shoppers. May will be a busy Market too with over 20 stalls filling the Rose Garden. It certainly should be warm enough for some picnicking while you listen to the music.

This month we will be doing some MARKET RESEARCH so please help us by joining in the activities linked to this- it will only take a couple of minutes and will help us to improve the market.

We will have 3 Guest stalls in May. STRAWBERRIES will be coming again, from Hull. Last month they ran out of strawberries before the end of the market, so make sure you buy some in good time. They are so tasty! April VOAKESshould be back with field grown Yorkshire ASPARAGUS and RHUBARB, provided that the weather doesn’t turn cold. You will also be able to buy beautiful bouquets of FLOWERS from BACKGARDEN BLOOMS.

Vicki WHITELEY will be back with PLANTS and vegetables. This will be MELANIES CHOCOLATES last market until the autumn as the chocolate will melt if they come in the summer. Make sure that you stock up now to keep you well supplied with treats.

John JOHNSON really enjoyed the Market and we hope that you enjoyed his FRESH FISH. He will now be a regular at all our markets.

We are not sure whether Roundgreen Farm will be able to continue bring VENISON to the market. Please check this website and twitter nearer the market date for more information. We are also looking for a new pie stall so watch this space

As usual we will have our THREE CHEESE STALLSbringing very delicious but very different types of cheeses to Headingley, LINCOLNSHIRE POACHER, CRYER AND STOTT and YORKSHIRE DAMA CHEESE.They all have prize winning varieties and lots of tasters to try. Yorkshire Dama sell Halum! (Halloumi) cheese. Check out their website which tells the fascinating story of their move from Syria to Yorkshire. Razan was also recently on ‘The Bottom Line’ on Radio 4. Don’t forget Lincolnshire Poacher sell raw milk and butter from their farm as well as cheeses.

BONDGATE BAKERY from Otley will have a wide selection of all kinds of breads.

SWILLINGTON ORGANIC  bring a wide range of MEAT, chicken, pork, lamb and beef ,from their East Leeds Organic farm including their award- winning sausages. You can’t get more Organic and local than Swillington!

ASHARUN will have freshly made SAMOSAS and a wide selection of SPICES.

HEADINGLEY COUNTRY MARKETS are our very own co-op, producing CAKES, biscuits, preserves and many other yummy foods from Headingley kitchens.

Jo at THISTLEMIST just loves making unusual SOUPS- like peppery  pea and lentil and patatas bravas,  make sure you have tried them all.  She also makes lots of really tasty pasta sauces.

Look out for AUTUMN HARVEST purple MUSHROOMS. You won’t get a bigger or better selection of mushrooms anywhere in Leeds and Jane will give you tips on how to cook them. Their dried mushrooms and mushroom powder are so useful too.

GLUTEN FREEKZ bake lots of 100% gluten free, delicious pies, cakes and much more.

ORGANIC  PANTRY have some rather unusual ORGANIC VEGETABLES, as well as the old favourites, onions, kale, broccoli, potatoes, spinach.

Mariesa will bring her HAPPI FOODS, raw ingredients, additive free, gluten free and sugar free, all looking so beautiful and tasting so good.

Mario OLIANAS will bring his touch of Italy, pizzas, enormous doughnuts and his home- made award winning Italian Cheese and lots more.

YANNIS KARDAMARKISwill have some this season’s Olive oil, with olives, from his family farm in Crete and many other Greek delicacies. You can refill your olive oil bottles and save money and the environment.

Alex from YORKSHIRE ORCHARDS brings APPLE Juice and juices mixed with all the local fruits you can imagine, raspberries, rhubarb, strawberries, blackcurrants, blackberries. Do try all the flavours.

You can’t get HONEY more local than HORSORTH BLOSSOMS and they have lovely presents made out of bees wax. Last year was a much better year for the bees than 2015 so let’s hope 2017 will be a good one too.

Of course, the Market wouldn’t be complete without June and Molly selling their CHURCH FARM EGGShens, quails, and ducks eggs. There were green hen’s eggs in April. Nigel Barden the radio 2 chef uses Church Farm Eggs in his recipes. Fame at last!!! And will there be more and double yolkers in May?

MUSIC. Jazz from the ever- popular King and I will be from about 10.30. We will all be dancing around the market this month!

The KIDS GAMES are very popular with more and more kids doing the game every month. It gives the kids something fun to do, as shopping can be a bit boring, older siblings can combine with their younger brothers and sisters and everyone gets a prize. Come to the Headingley Development Trust Stall to join in.

The HDT Stall also has lots of information about events in Headingley. Have you joined HDT to give your support to the many local projects it runs, only costs £5? Does your Farmers’ Market Bag need replacing? The Red shoulder bags are only £4 and last for years.

Don’t forget your recycling- egg boxes, jars and bottles. You can get refills of Olive Oil too, you know.

We don’t sell hot food and drinks at the Market as there are lots of cafes in Headingley. Why not have a coffee or delicious lunch at HEART Café on nearby Bennett Rd. Like the Farmers’ Market it is a HDT project so please support it.

We look forward to seeing you, your friends and family 9-12.30 on Saturday 13thMay 2017 at the Rose Garden, Headingley LS6 3JJ.
